Philanthropic group meeting Feb. 23
The local chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization will hold a no-host luncheon for members who are visiting Kona or have moved to the area. The luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 23 at Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai restaurant on Kamehameha III Road at Keauhou Shopping Center.

The organization supports women’s education through scholarships, loans and grants.
Kona Krew chapter learning about vitamins
Marie-anne Rouse, wellness adviser, will discuss “Do You Know How To Choose Your Vitamins?” during the Kona Krew chapter of Business Network International meeting scheduled for 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona. Rouse will speak about five important questions to ask when choosing vitamins.
Visitors are welcome. There is no fee to attend.

Heiva I Hawaii competition scheduled
Te Ea O Te Turama and Fun to Jump Kona present a weekend of free Polynesian music, dance and culture during the Heiva I Hawaii 2012 Tahitian Dance Competition. The event also features a Mr. and Miss Heiva I Hawaii 2012 compettion and Fun to Jump Kona’s Mahalo Fun Day.
Beginning Friday at The Shops at Mauna Lani will be a drumming and Aparima workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. and the Mr. and Miss Heiva I Hawaii 2012 Competition from 6 to 9 p.m.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona will be a Polynesian village of food and craft vendors and inflatables. Also scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the gym is a solo competition and Tamarii group competition and, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, the Otea and Ahuroa Workshop.
Group Otea, Aparima and drumming competitions will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Kailua-Kona gym, followed by an awards ceremony from 3 to 4 p.m. and a free concert featuring Turama from 6 to 8 p.m.

Village stroll slated for Sunday
Kailua Village’s monthly Kokua Kailua Village Stroll takes place Sunday along Alii Drive. The thoroughfare is converted to a festive pedestrian-only walkway from 1 to 6 p.m.
During Kokua Kailua, besides the shops and restaurants along the road, dozens of vendors are set up along Alii Drive selling everything from art to jewelry to coffee.
Free entertainment begins at 4 p.m. on the lawn at Hulihee Palace.
Kokua Kailua Village Stroll is sponsored by the Kailua Village Business Improvement District, Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, Destination Kona Coast, Kailua Village Merchants Association, Hulihee Palace, West Hawaii Today and Pacific Radio Group. The program is designed to rally support for merchants and restaurants and to remind residents to shop, dine and buy local.
Kealakekua is site for line dance class
A new line dance class is starting at the Queen Emma Center, located at 81-1004 Konawaena Road, behind Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.
Mondays, starting Feb. 27, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., students will perform rhythmic, low-impact warmups and easy line dances. Participants should wear comfortable shoes with leather or otherwise slippery soles.
The fee is $10 per class or $75 for 10 classes.

Guided hike planned at Puuhonua o Honaunau
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park presents “Become Inspired by the Authentic,” with 93 park events slated for 2012, including monthly guided archaeological hikes to historic Kiilae Village.
From 8:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 23, the park is hosting a guided archaeological hike. The hike will cross three ahupuaa (land divisions), Honaunau, Keokea, and Kiilae to the south park boundary. Over one mile of the 1871 Trail is within the park, forming the primary coastal route for the north-south travel in the area. Historically, the trail was the main coastal artery connecting several villages along its length.
The hike will be limited to 15 people; reservations must be made by phone in advance. The hike traverses a natural lava landscape and is rugged terrain; hikers need to be physically prepared. The 3-mile roundtrip walk requires hiking shoes, hat, sunscreen, a snack and lots of drinking water to be comfortable. Hikers will meet at the visitor center.
Park entrance fees are $5 per vehicle or $3 per person for walk-ins.
